- Model: TAS093017
The HMS Erebus was a Royal Navy ship that participated with the
HMS Terror on James Clark Ross’s Erebus and Terror expedition in
Antarctica and other expeditions in the Arctic. These two ships were
reinforced at the bow to resist the twisting of the pack ice on the boat and they had a steam engines.
In 1845, the Erebus and the Terror were assigned to traverse the last un-navigated sections of the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic and to record magnetic data to help determine whether a better understanding could aid navigation. The expedition met with disaster after both ships became icebound in Victoria Strait. After being icebound for more than a year Erebus and Terror were abandoned in April 1848, by which point Franklin and nearly two dozen others had died.
